Street Markets have always been part of the city. A place where the farmers brought their produce. Where one could purchase vegetables, fruit, plants, trees and flowers. South Dakota's Sioux Falls Market in the 600 block of South Phillips opened July 13, 1912 and enjoyed a brisk business where the city and country folks traded and did a whole lot of visiting.

Lack of viruses and diseases resulted in heavy production of cantaloupes in California's Coachella Valley. In 1899 a crate of cantaloupes brought $11 in Chicago. Circa 1905-1906 brought aphids which took over all the crops and cantaloupes were no longer the leading crop. The farmers then grew onions, white wax and yellow bermudas. The key to prosperity was early crops and good prices. There was a cantaloupe and later an onion packing association shed at Thermal. The first grapefruit orchard (Waldtron Ranch), was developed in 1925. The first grapes planted in the valley were a variety of the very hardy Malagas.

The Congregational Church on Eleventh and Dakota, built in 1909, was the last church in Sioux Falls to be built of quartzite. It replaced the original framed church. The pleasures of a special occasion includes the selection of the correct head apparal. Easter Sunday was always special and not to be taken lightly. Some say that in this day and age there is no longer any occasions to wear a hat. This is a mistaken belief. The occasions are still there but we no longer give them the distinction they once had.

Fresh snow on an empty hill brings joyous shouts from the children. This is winter joy in the sharp clean air. Smiles flash as down the slope they glide and then the laughing children trudgingly pull their sleds back up the hill. Sleighbells ring as the carriages clatter by.
