Painting on location or from life enhanced my composing process for any subject I would want to paint. As much as I enjoy the shapes of the chosen subject, I find myself equally attracted to the shapes of space that is around them, which will make or break how the painting reads or conveys an emotion. Since then I often think of myself as a composer involved in the creative process of visual art. In part I am composing a painting with color notes, temperature scales and metered spaces”.

Color Composition:

“Last summer I had an understanding for composition of my subject, however since last fall, in the Badlands, I have come to understand the composition of color ( color is truly about temperature and value scales) in giving a painting movement, as well as a feeling of light and air. In the work (not pictured) it wasn't just the roof being off, acceptable yes, but still "off". The foreground tree did not seem to claim the rest of the work. It was yet out of place. It now "claims" the grass, the sky and the home as part of it's self, and fits in. At least that is what I see and feel when I look across the room from where I am now”.
