Having grown up in the eastern region of the States, I had difficulty, once I arrived in South Dakota, comprehending why rural South Dakotans built their houses so close to the road when they had additional ACRES of property for backyards. This past summer while exploring southwestern South Dakota for sketch material I realized why: it makes it easier, and probably cheaper, to access electrical and telephone utilities that run parallel to the roads. |

This painting is inspired by sandstone formations in the South Dakota Badlands. Wind and water have a daily affect on sculpting these formations. |

Living in a rural state has made me very aware of electricity's importance in modernized countries. But Nature can interfere at any moment: tornadoes, grass fires, violent thunderstorms, sleet, and blizzards. |

As I painted this piece I saw myself floating above the clouds, soaring in and out of their mistiness. Then I was diving below the water. Then soaring up into the indigo limits of the atmosphere. |
