Artist's Statement - 2007
I view Nature as reality and humanity's state of existence as escape from reality. From this viewpoint I explore through my artwork the escape impetus and its polarity: Nature's uncontrollable, turbulent environment versus Nature's beauty. Against this I interject two concepts of a human's isolation: harmful - a consequence of our escapism, and beneficial - an escape from our escapism. My current artwork explores these ideas in oil medium (water-mixable) with western South Dakota landscapes* as inspiration.
*2002-2003 South Dakota Arts Council support is provided with funds from the State of South Dakota, through the Department of Education and Cultural Affairs, and the National Endowment for the Arts.
